Jen

Office Manager

As the daughter of Dr. Joe Valese, Jen has quite literally grown up in the Animal Hospital of Mt. Pocono. She couldn’t help but fall in love with the veterinary profession from day one! Jen takes a great amount of pride in helping to make her family’s business grow and run smoothly every day.

Jen grew up here in the Poconos and first began lending a hand at the clinic when she was just a young girl. Throughout high school, she put in hours part-time, then began as a full-time employee in January of 2006 after graduating from Penn State University. As the hospital’s Office Manager, Jen does a lot of work behind the scenes; she loves maintaining orders and inventory, managing the clinic’s social media presence, and monitoring and measuring the hospital’s growth. She’s particularly passionate about developing a fear-free practice to allow pets to remain as calm as possible during office visits.

Jen has two cats of her own at home. Maui rules the household and Jonesy is a scaredy-cat through and through, except when it comes to belly rubs from his mom!

In her time away from the hospital, Jen loves outdoor activities. She’s an avid skier in the winter, and loves fishing, boating, and hiking in the wilderness during the warmer months.

Cassandra

Veterinary Assistant

After working in a job field that she didn’t find very rewarding, Cassie wanted a change. Since she’d always had a soft spot for animals and felt a desire to help her community, she decided to pursue a career in animal care! Cassie now helps pets and their owners daily as a Veterinary Assistant here at the Animal Hospital of Mt. Pocono.

A native of Pocono Pines, Pennsylvania, Cassie joined the clinic family in 2013 after coming across an advertisement for an open positon. She’s thrilled to continue learning new things every day here at the hospital, and she loves knowing that she’s helped an animal who can’t speak for themselves. If she sees a pet leave the office healthier than when they came in, Cassie knows she’s done her job!

Cassie has a beautiful young daughter, and they’ve recently welcomed a new furry member into the family: Bella, a beagle/poodle mix puppy who enjoys playing outside with Cassie’s daughter, niece, and nephew. When she isn’t spending time with her family or curling up with Bella, Cassie enjoys drawing, which she can do at any place and time as long as she has paper and a pencil. She’s even been mentioned in the local newspaper for her artistic skills!

Kelly

Receptionist

Kelly has always considered herself a people person, and she adores spending time around animals. What better place to work, she thought, than in an animal clinic? She’s been serving the pet owners of the area as one of the Animal Hospital of Mt. Pocono’s veterinary receptionists for nine years.

Kelly is a native of the Poconos and first started working here at the clinic shortly after she’d had her son. Her favorite part of every day is meeting the community’s pet lovers, and she strives to do everything in her power to help pets and their owners feel comfortable. Kelly never passes up the opportunity to hear a fun pet story!

Kelly and her husband, Bill, have four children—Ashlee, Karissa, Kayla, and Zachary—as well as an elderly cat named Roni and a dog named Fergie. As a family, they enjoy spending time outdoors, visiting amusement parks, watching movies, and playing games together. Kelly is also a baseball coach for the local six- to eight-year-old division, and finds that she learns just as much from her team as they do from her!

Cassie

Veterinary Assistant Trainee

Cassie grew up in the Lehigh Valley with her parents, grandparents, a younger brother, and plenty of family pets. Her family always fostered in her a love of nature and the outdoors, and Cassie fell in love with animals early on in life. When she was a bit older and rescued her own cat from malnourishment and a serious flea infestation, she came to a realization: she would love to help others’ pets in the same way!

Cassie earned her Bachelor’s degree in biology from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, and took a job after graduation studying the nesting behavior of wild hawks. She was then hired for a brief period by her college internship connection before joining the Animal Hospital of Mt. Pocono team in the fall of 2016.

Here at the clinic, Cassie loves to use her skills to help pets feel calmer around the office; it’s very eye-opening for her to see fear-free techniques make an impact over patients’ repeat visits to the hospital. She also loves to continue learning on a daily basis, whether it’s completing laboratory tests, advancing her pet-handling skills, or working hands-on with exotic animals.

In her free time, Cassie likes running, snowboarding, and hiking and backpacking in the great outdoors. She has two pets of her own at home: Oreo the cat won’t hesitate to make himself comfortable and take a nap on just about anyone; Spike, a bearded dragon, loves spending time in his hammock and searching for new places to climb around the house.

Shirlee

Veterinary Assistant

Shirlee has dreamt of working directly with animals ever since she was a little girl. When her mother rescued a horse, Shirlee set about learning everything she possibly could—it wasn’t long before she was hooked. For her, a career in the veterinary world was the perfect fit! Now, Shirlee is proud to serve the area’s pets and animal owners as a Veterinary Assistant.

Shirlee is originally from Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania and attended an equestrian school in West Virginia. After moving back to her home state and working at a barn for a period of time, she realized that she still had a desire to learn about caring for other animals—that’s when she decided to jump head-first into the veterinary profession. Shirlee joined the Animal Hospital of Mt. Pocono family in October of 2016 as a Veterinary Assistant, and she’s especially fond of learning new things on a daily basis and getting to meet new pets and clientele every day.

Away from the clinic, much of Shirlee’s free time is also spent around animals—she loves to train horses, and she also helps to train young riders. One of her proudest moments came when a seven-year-old student of hers was able to canter around the arena for the first time!
