Meet the folks who make it all happen. We see big potential in every moment, & care deeply about what we do every day.
Dr. Joseph Valese
Owner, Veterinarian
Even as a young boy, Dr. Joe Valese was fascinated by all living things; he knew all the neighborhood dogs and was constantly caring for injured wildlife around town. During high school, a family friend who worked as a veterinarian suggested the profession to Dr. Valese. That captured his imagination. He started helping out at a local clinic shortly afterward, and his life-long passion for veterinary medicine was born!
Dr. Valese grew up in the New Jersey suburbs, and attended the agricultural college at Rutgers University after high school. After adding a Master’s degree to his Bachelor’s education, he was accepted into veterinary school at Michigan State University to receive his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.
After graduating in 1983, Dr. Valese took an Associate position at a mixed-animal practice in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania before moving to the Reading area to start working in a busy small-animal hospital. Eventually, he got the itch to start a practice of his own—that’s when he came across an offer to purchase what was then known as the Animal Clinic of Mt. Pocono. Dr. Valese bought the practice in May of 1986, modified the name, upgraded the facility, and has happily been practicing veterinary medicine here ever since.
Dr. Valese is particularly fond of veterinary dentistry, and has pursued advanced dental training for over 10 years. He’s also interested in holistic medicine techniques like acupuncture and herbal medicine, having seen great successes with these treatments in his patients when modern medical practices fell short. Most of all, Dr. Valese enjoys connecting with pet owners and hearing each and every client’s special pet story.
Outside of his interests in the veterinary world, Dr. Valese is an avid gardener; much of his handiwork can be seen blooming outside of the practice! He’s also fond of skiing, hiking, spending time on the water, running, woodworking, cooking, and keeping busy with various projects.
Dr. Valese and his wife, Debbie, who works at the hospital, have been married since 1978. They have two grown children and one grandchild. Nicholas is married and lives in Virginia, and Jennifer is married and lives locally. At home, Dr. Valese and his wife share their lives with Dozer, an energetic red standard poodle, as well as a pond full of koi fish.
