Do you have a Persian? These cute furballs are one of the most popular breeds in the world. Persians really are very sweet and lovable pets. However, they do have some unique care needs. A local veterinarian discusses the Persian below.
Temperament
Persians are usually quite relaxed and laid back. They’re typically also very affectionate, and love to snuggle with their humans. In fact, in one study, the Persian scored higher than non-pedigreed kitties in many categories, including vocalization, cleanliness, and how affectionate they are. However, they can be choosy about whose laps they grace. Your furry pal may be a cuddlebug to you, but completely ignore everyone else.
Grooming
One of the Persians’ most distinct features is their pretty fur. Fluffy will need a helping hand with her beauty routine. We recommend brushing your little buddy every day, or at least every other day. Your feline friend may also need the occasional bath. If you adopt a kitten, it’s best to get your little ball of fluff used to being bathed while she’s young. (Trust us: your future self will thank you.)
History
The Persian has a fairly long and distinguished history. We’re pretty sure they know this, too. In fact, they’re one of the oldest known breeds of cats. These fluffballs have been depicted in hieroglyphics dated as far back as 1684 BC. As you may have guessed, Fluffy is probably from Persia, specifically in the area now known as Iran. She was first brought to Europe in the 1500’s by an Italian traveler named Pietro Della Valle. It’s probably safe to say that she immediately charmed the socks off everyone she met.
Coloring
Persians tend to be very fluffy, and can sport a variety of pretty colors and patterns. Some of these include solid, silver and gold, shaded, smoke, tabby, particolor, bicolor, and Himalayan. Don’t ask us to pick a favorite: they’re all adorable.
Chatter
Persians are fairly talkative, but they aren’t too loud. Actually, their voices tend to be quite cute and charismatic, and perhaps a bit squeaky. You may notice Fluffy is quite an interactive meower, and likes to chat with her humans.
Activity
Persians are about average on the activity scale for cats. They’re playful, but once past kittenhood, they usually calm down. Adult Persians aren’t usually the frisky furballs that you’ll be plucking from your drapes or disengaging from your ankle. They do best as pampered indoor ‘princess’ pets. We don’t recommend letting them go outdoors.
Health Issues
Persians are often quite flat-faced. Many breeders deliberately seek out that squished-face look. Unfortunately, that cute appearance comes at a cost. These cats can be vulnerable to some serious health issues, including shortness of breath, tearing, and eye problems. Ask your vet for care tips.
